Now, all you have to do is sit and wait for the Great Pumpkin to arrive in your living room. And by Great Pumpkin, we mean It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, one of the best family Halloween movies of all time. But, unless you plan it correctly, if you’re looking to watch the famed Peanuts special, you could end up like Linus and Sally, disappointed on the day after Halloween.
When Will the Charlie Brown Halloween Special Air in 2021?
If you’re a long-time Charlie Brown fan, you might look at your TV listings for your local ABC affiliate to try to find an airing of the Great Pumpkin. But this year, just like last year, you won’t be able to find it there.

Instead, in order to guarantee that you’ll be able to watch the It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown this year, you’re going to have to subscribe to Apple TV+. Apple actually has the rights to all of the great Peanuts holiday specials, including A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Happy New Year Charlie Brown and others, in addition to shows like Snoopy in Space and The Snoopy Show. If you’re in a family of Peanuts superfans, it would be worth it to subscribe.
Last year, Apple TV+ did make the special available for free, streaming without a subscription for a weekend while also airing on TV on PBS and PBS Kids. No similar announcements have been made for this year yet.

With most movies, even if you can’t stream them for free, you can find a way to buy or rent them through services like Amazon Prime Video. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Great Pumpkin.

It’s not going to be available on Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video or Vudu (though those services have their own Halloween offerings that are worth checking out especially Netflix and Hulu).
If you can still play discs at home, though, you can buy a copy. It’s included in the Peanuts Holiday Collection, which comes with the three big holiday specials. That way, you won’t wind up in the same position in a month, checking all the TV listings and streaming services looking for A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving or A Charlie Brown Christmas (which will only be airing on Apple TV+ anyway). As more and more streaming services pop up, and rights to different movies and shows bounce from one to the other — has anyone else noticed how the Harry Potter movies keep going back and forth between HBO Max and Peacock? — buying your favorites on Blu-ray might be the safest bet in any case.

Tucked in the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which opened Thursday in Los Angeles, is a surprisingly modest exhibit of “significant Oscars.” The museum, after all, is the latest venture of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that each year entertains, inflames and invariably stupefies movie lovers of every taste and critical persuasion with that gaudy bacchanalia of self-love known as the Oscars.
Given the academy’s focus on all things Oscar, its latest production could have played up the event even more than it does. Yet while the awards invariably loom large, as does Hollywood — this is very much an academy endeavor, as the many nods to Steven Spielberg underscore — the long-delayed museum has embraced a tricky, complicated brief to accentuate the positive, to borrow the title of an Oscar-nominated song. The industry’s ugliness, its racism and sexism, is directly addressed, but the emphasis is on diversity and pluralism, not past and present sins. Call it a museum of good intentions.
The 20 statuettes in the significant Oscars gallery underscores this idea. The oldest is the best cinematography award given to “Sunrise” in 1929, the first year of the ceremony and the only year the academy divided its top honors between “unique and artistic picture” and “outstanding” film; the latter was given to “Wings” and isn’t on display. The most recent is the 2017 best adapted screenplay award for “Moonlight,” which is part of an inclusive lineup that includes best actor (Sidney Poitier), costume design (Eiko Ishioka), documentary (“The Times of Harvey Milk”) and song (“Up Where We Belong”).
Like much of the museum, the Oscar exhibit is fun, informative, ideologically freighted and touching, in specific because of the empty case that should hold the best supporting prize Hattie McDaniel won in 1940 for her much-debated turn in “Gone With the Wind.” (It went missing years ago.) She was the first African American nominated for an Oscar; a clip of her poignant acceptance speech plays nearby. In 1940, the Oscars were held at the Cocoanut Grove, where picketers outside protested the film’s racism. Inside, McDaniel sat at a separate table, segregated from her white co-stars.
McDaniel’s lost Oscar and the empty display case resonate, partly because of her public role as a cultural flash point and because they symbolize the larger, structural absences that have long characterized the American movie industry and that the academy has struggled with, particularly in the last decade. Formed in 1927, partly to buff the image of the industry, the academy has recently expanded and diversified its membership, a venture that has generated a great deal of publicity and rather less substantive, real-world change in the concerns it represents. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite is unlikely to be retired anytime soon, however hard the academy tries to make it obsolete.
The academy’s push toward greater diversity extends to its museum. One room, “Composer: Hildur Gudnadottir,” part of the sweeping “Stories of Cinema” exhibit, features a work created for it by Hildur Gudnadottir that you can listen to in a dark room. Gudnadottir won an Oscar for her score for “Joker” — perhaps the strongest explanation for why she’s kicking off this exhibition — and belongs to a select cohort. As the museum’s website (if not its wall caption) notes, in 2019, just 6 percent of the top 250 films had scores by women.
There is a lot more to see and ponder, even if the exhibition space, at 50,000 square feet, also feels somewhat modest. (The Museum of Modern Art added close to that much space in its last expansion.) Elsewhere, there is an extensive Hayao Miyazaki retrospective. Housed in the Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery, it is down the hall from a much smaller room that holds “The Pixar Toy Story 3D Zoetrope,” a whirling, carousel-like amusement that features maquettes of characters from the Disney franchise.
The two-story “Backdrop: An Invisible Art” is a showcase for the huge reproduction of Mount Rushmore used in “North by Northwest.” In other galleries reserved for the museum’s biggest, most provocative exhibit, the multipart “Stories of Cinema,” you can gape at the bedazzled ruby slippers that Judy Garland wore as Dorothy when she clicked her heels in “The Wizard of Oz” and gawk at one of the sleds from “Citizen Kane,” glowing jewel-like in soft light. Elsewhere, a fiberglass model of the shark in “Jaws” floats above escalators.
These relics have charm and an iconic aura, and there’s an undeniable kick in seeing them in person. More than once, I found myself wildly grinning at an object — cool, the typewriter that Joseph Stefano used to write “Psycho”! — even as I tried to decide whether these items were important cinematic artifacts, Instagram-ready tourist bait or, really, both. François Truffaut, for one, found little value in a film museum that spent resources on objects rather than on the preservation of film or on programming (both will be well-represented in the museum by the academy’s own holdings). “Putting a Garbo costume next to the skull from ‘Psycho’ was a gimmick for tourists,” he said.
Truffaut was wrong, I think, and not simply because I’d like a close look at the skull from that Hitchcock shocker. Movies are many things: art, artifacts, representations, statements, manifestations of specific times and spaces, real and imagined. But they’re also filled with and defined by material objects that have their own meaning and magic. Nothing makes that clearer than “The Path to Cinema: Highlights From the Richard Balzer Collection,” a fantastic selection of early optical devices with marvelous names like the praxinoscope that speak to our curious human desire for viewing machines.
“Stories of Cinema” stretches across three floors and has a name that is strongly redolent of Sundance. The first part is on the ground floor in the soaring Sidney Poitier Grand Lobby, a vaulted, not especially inviting industrial-looking space. On large monitors mounted in a dim room, you can sit transfixed watching clips culled from international film history, spanning the commercial mainstream and the avant-garde. There are snippets of work from the first woman filmmaker, Alice Guy Blaché (two clips), as well as from Yasujiro Ozu (six), John Cassavetes (one! come on!) and Steven Spielberg (nine) as well as from too many 2021 Oscar contenders (eight).
The first part of “Stories” is expansive enough not to offend, though it will generate arguments. Because the clips are not identified (the list is online), it also has the quality of a game that allows visitors to guess which “X-Men” zipped by (“Days of Future Past”) and wait to see if Roman Polanski, who was expelled from the academy, made the cut. He did (two clips), though notably Woody Allen, the Oscar fave turned persona non grata, did not. He never joined the academy but his exclusion here is striking. Instead, the museum has set its sights on filmmakers who together tend to represent a parallel, less-known vanguard that has been systematically ignored, forgotten and marginalized.
To that end, the museum has made some other notable choices, including about canon formation. The indie movie “Real Women Have Curves” has been given pride of place next to “Citizen Kane” in the second part of “Stories.” This section also highlights Bruce Lee; the cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (a collaborator of Alfonso Cuarón); and the editor Thelma Schoonmaker (best known for her work with Martin Scorsese). Also here is the African American pioneer Oscar Micheaux, a radical independent who worked outside of Hollywood. His exhibit and another temporary one organized by Spike Lee include some of the few references to D.W. Griffith, of “The Birth of a Nation” infamy.
Lee has talked in the past about watching “Birth” in a class at New York University, where he was shown the film without consideration to Griffith’s racism. That attitude was long common in film studies. For too long, scholars and critics tended to focus on the aesthetic and narrative aspects of Griffith’s work while ignoring or eliding its racism. Among other things, “Birth” became a recruitment tool for the Ku Klux Klan. Griffith’s placement in the museum is emblematic of the bind it faces: To give him prominence would generate criticism, but sidelining him distorts the true arc of American cinema.
I broached the subject of Griffith and the provocations presented by vexed filmmakers like him with Jacqueline Stewart, the museum’s chief artistic and programming officer. Speaking by phone on Tuesday, Stewart noted with a laugh that the morning had gotten away from her. Just hours earlier, the MacArthur Foundation had announced that she was one of the recipients of its 2021 “genius” grants, recognition for a highly regarded film scholar who’s made an unusual, welcome leap to public prominence, most notably as a host for Turner Classic Movies. Stewart joined the Academy Museum staff only in January, after the exhibitions were designed. She describes her role as “fine-tuning.”
Addressing the challenges that American cinema presents, Stewart said that in both “major and oblique references” to filmmakers, the museum is seeking to encourage people to learn more. The greatest hits are here, but so are movies that are unlikely to be included in more rarefied canons. The museum, Stewart said, wanted to use its space to surprise and inspire. “I think that folks will be surprised that the way that we get at narrative in this opening iteration of our museum is through these two Black filmmakers,” referring to Micheaux and Spike Lee. If, for instance, visitors seek to know more about Griffith through Micheaux, she continued, “I think that’s amazing.”
Whether visitors will seek more than selfies with the “Star Wars” bots remains to be seen. That is, if they stop streaming for a while and get out of the house.

The return of Michael Myers is just a few weeks away, and one of the studios behind Halloween Kills would like you to be as hyped as possible for that release—along with all its other horror projects that are currently coming down the pipeline. The fact that it’s officially the spookiest month of the year didn’t hurt I suppose. Blumhouse’s BlumFest 2021 spotlighted not just the latest entry in the slasher franchise, but a bunch of other titles, including some brand-new announcements.
First up, here’s “Return to Haddonfield,” a new featurette for Halloween Kills—featuring star Jamie Lee Curtis and other cast and crew members talking about how the new brings back actors and characters from the 1978 horror classic. In a quick clip from the film, we get to see Charles “Sheriff Brackett” Cyphers repeat his iconic “one good scare” line from the original.
Halloween fans can head to Blumhouse’s YouTube channel or Facebook page later today to see a live-streamed introduction (8 p.m. PT) and post-film Q&A with producer Jason Blum and director David Gordon Green (approximately 10 p.m. PT) in conjunction with the movie’s screening at the genre-focused Beyond Fest in Hollywood, CA.
As for the rest of BlumFest, you can check out the stream below; it features a chat with Renée Zellweger about her upcoming limited TV series, The Thing About Pam, which hits NBC in 2022. It’s more true crime than horror but here’s the synopsis: “NBC’s and Blumhouse Television’s The Thing About Pam is based on the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria that resulted in her husband Russ’s conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her. His conviction was later overturned. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Pam Hupp.” Here are some other announcements from today’s event:
“The first major collaboration between Tyler Perry Studios and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions,” a thriller called Help that will be written and directed by Alan McElroy (Star Trek: Discovery, Wrong Turn).
The as-yet-untitled feature directorial debut from John Logan (Alien: Covenant, Skyfall, Penny Dreadful), which will stream exclusively on Peacock.
A focus on the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” quartet of thrillers and horror movies, Bingo Hell and Black As Night (premiering today on Amazon Prime) and The Manor and Madres (October 8 on Amazon Prime); read io9’s earlier coverage of the series here, with more to come.
Premiere dates for writer-director Alex McAulay’sA House on the Bayou (November 19) and director Ali LeRoi’s American Refugee (December 10), the first two films in an eight-film series of “elevated, standalone horror/genre-thriller movies” created as a collaboration between Blumhouse Television and Epix. The films will be day-and-date streaming on Epix and available for digital purchase from Paramount Home Entertainment.
A chat with director Rob Savage (Host), whose latest film, Dashcam, is currently making the festival rounds.
And another new movie announcement: “Donald Sutherland and Jaeden Martell have been cast in Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, written and directed by John Lee Hancock, based on the short story by Stephen King. Production begins this month—Blumhouse and Ryan Murphy producing—and will be available on Netflix globally in 2022.”
Also, not part of BlumFest specifically, but still something very cool to check out this month: Revelations, a new doomsday cult-focused podcast from Blumhouse Television and Vespucci and hosted by our former Gizmodo colleague Jennings Brown, who’s currently at the Gateway. As Deadline reports, “the six-part series tells the story of the Fellowship of Friends, which was founded by Robert Earl Burton, an East Bay schoolteacher who began preaching out of a van in Berkeley in the 1960s before founding the fellowship in 1970 and building it up to around 2,500 members. The group ran the successful Renaissance Vineyard and Winery between 1982 and 2015.” It premieres on October 3 on Spotify.

No. No Time to Die is a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Eon Productions movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. While HBO Max—which is owned by Warner Media—has been the streaming home for Warner Bros. movies like The Suicide Squad, it will not be the streaming home for MGM movies like No Time to Die.
Is No Time to Die on Netflix?
No. No Time to Die is not on Netflix. While Netflix has signed some deals to stream some Sony films, it’s unclear if No Time to Die will be included in that. Therefore, it’s unlikely that Venom: Let There Be Carnage will be streaming on Netflix any time soon.
Is No Time to Die on Disney+?
No, sorry. Disney recently made a deal with Sony to bring Spider-Man and other Marvel properties to Disney+ after the movies are initially released on Netflix, but that deal begins with Sony’s 2022 releases. Who’s performing the No Time to Die theme song?
Almost as big as the actual movie itself are the theme songs that play over the opening credits of each Bond film. Why Was Reddit NFL Streams Banned?
The r/nflstreams subreddit was one of the most valuable resources for NFL fans around the world. Links, which were reliable for the most part, were posted for every single NFL game.
Fans were also spoiled for choice, considering they could watch NFL Redzone and NFL Network. And the best part about all of this was that the streams were completely free. No payment, no account, just a link with a couple of pop-ups here and there.
However, the free ride came to an end when Reddit banned the page. So, why did Reddit ban one of their most popular pages?
The short answer to this question is that the subreddit was technically illegal. If you watch other sports, you probably weren’t too surprised to see Reddit make this decision. Before the ban, the page for NBA and Soccer streams were also taken down.
The basic problem is that posting free links is a clear case of copyright infringement and leagues were starting to take notice. Interestingly though, Reddit was never forced to ban the subreddit, but rather chose to do so according to their own repeat infringement policy.
The policy reads:
Our policy is to close the accounts of users, in appropriate circumstances, who have repeatedly been charged with copyright infringement. Sometimes a repeat infringement problem is limited to one user and we close just that user’s account. Other times, the problem pervades a whole subreddit community and we close the subreddit.

Can I watch NFL games on Amazon?
You’re getting closer to being able to do so, but not this week. Amazon Prime subscribers will be able to watch 11 games this year (including the Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints on Christmas Day). The online retailer has struck a deal with Fox to air select Thursday night games. The first co-aired game occurs Oct. 8, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers facing the Chicago Bears. They’ll be featured in the Prime Video section and Amazon will also offer the NFL Network pregame show before each game at 7:30 p.m. ET.
If you don’t have Prime, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial.
Does the NFL offer any viewing packages to watch the games I want?

NFL App
The NFL App will let you stream games that are being broadcast locally in your market on Sundays. If you want to watch an ‘out of market’ game, you’ve got two choices.
NFL Game Pass
There are couple hitches with this service. You can’t use it to watch live games, but you can watch anything once its main broadcast ends. There’s a seven-day free trial, after which you’re looking at a $100 charge per season.
NFL Sunday Ticket
DirecTV customers have access to it, but if you’re not a subscriber and live in an area where it’s not available, you can watch any NFL game live, online or on TV for $73.49 per month or $293.36 for the entire season.
NFL live streams in the US
Looking at the NFL 2021-22 schedule, you can see that games will air on a wide range of services and channels, including old standbys like ESPN, NFL Network and your local FOX, NBC and CBS affiliates.
Just like last season, ESPN has Monday Night Football and NBC will have Sunday Night Football. CBS gets AFC games on Sunday afternoons, and FOX will have the NFC games. Amazon Prime Video has some Thursday Night Football games, while the NFL Network will continue to offer a bunch of games throughout the year.
So, that makes it really easy to recommend where cord-cutters should turn to watch the NFL season: Fubo TV. Built for all things sports, Fubo has all three of those local broadcasters, plus ESPN and NFL Network. That’s why it’s one of the best streaming services.
NFL live streams in the UK
You’re going to want Sky Sports for watching NFL games in the U.K. The Sky Sports NFL channel (which will feature more than 100 live games this season) and Sky Sports Main Event are the primary destinations for your viewing pleasure.
Sky Sports NFL will pack a lot of content. Specifically, expect at least 5 live games per week, with “first-pick exclusive games … in the 6pm and 9pm slot every Sunday” (according to Sky) and every Thursday, Sunday and Monday Night Football game. It’s also getting NFL RedZone, and NFL Network programming, including Good Morning Football and Total Access.
Also expect documentaries “and other content” via NFL Films and NBC Sports, and original Sky Sports programming about the NFL.
If you’re an existing Sky customer, you can get all of that with the Sky Sports Complete Pack, for £39 per month.
If you’re not looking to spend that much, you can get a less comprehensive Sky Sports pass from Now TV. Daily, weekly and monthly passes range from £9.99 to £33.99.
NFL live streams in Canada
Get in, folks, we’re going to Da Zone. Or to be more specific, Canadian football fans will need DAZN to watch the NFL 2021-22 season. DAZN is trying to get GamePass rights, but that has not been announced yet.
DAZN is also the home of live Champions League soccer games. Plus, Canadians get a 30-day free trial of DAZN here.
Earlier this month, Apple unveiled the iPhone 13, Apple Watch 7, iPad Mini 6 and a new entry-level iPad but nary a new MacBook. But new models might be here soon.
Apple introduced the first MacBooks with its own Apple silicon M1 chip last fall, and new models could be announced as early as mid-October. New 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros are expected, along with a revamped MacBook Air. The new machines could introduce an M2 (M1X?) processor, and the next MacBook Pro models are rumored to announce the return of the MagSafe charger, the HDMI port and the SD card slot — while jettisoning the Touch Bar in favor of physical keys.
It’s probably best to wait to see if an October Apple event materializes before plunking down for a new MacBook, but if you’re ready to buy a first-gen M1 MacBook, you’ll find some discounts at Amazon. You can save up to $109 on a M1 MacBook Air and $100 on a M1 MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro lines received the M1 update, but the big 16-inch MacBook Pro still uses an Intel Core i7 or i9 chip. And Apple still sells two higher-end configurations of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel parts; the company has stated that it will support all the Intel-powered Macs for years to come. While you might be tempted by a discount on an Intel-based MacBook, it had better be significant to convince you to get that instead of a new M1 MacBook. Our tests of the M1 machines show a significant performance increase over their predecessors. Plus, the M1 MacBook Air boasts a fanless design for silent operation.

Pricing for new M1 MacBooks
The new MacBooks maintain the pricing of the models they replaced: The new MacBook Air starts at $999; the new MacBook Pro starts at $1,299. There are a couple of ways to grab either at a discount.
Want to buy new? The new M1 MacBook Air models are discounted by $49 and $109 right now on Amazon, while the MacBook Pro models are $100 off. While Amazon still has the best prices for these machines, the current discounts are down from the $150 price breaks we saw earlier this month. One benefit of paying full price and buying from Apple, however, is you can customize the machine and add more RAM or a higher-capacity solid-state drive, whereas the models sold on Amazon and other retailers are fixed configurations.
Want to go the refurb route? You can now find refurbished M1 MacBooks on Apple’s Certified Refurbished Mac page. Refurb inventory changes rapidly so you may not always see an M1 MacBook Air or Pro listed. It’s worth keeping an eye out, however, because you can lock in substantial savings, up to $200. Rick Broida, CNET’s Cheapskate emeritus, is a big fan of refurbs, particularly Apple’s — which are often as good as new.

The system also supplies 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. It lacks the Touch Bar (which could be viewed as a net positive) but features a 13.3-inch Retina display, Touch ID and the Magic keyboard. The $150 discount we saw earlier this month at Amazon is gone, but Amazon’s current $49 price break is still the best deal we are seeing right now.

The step-up MacBook Air model has a list price of $1,249 and delivers the M1 processor with a slight difference from the baseline model — it has an eight-core GPU versus the seven cores you get in the model above. More significantly, it doubles the storage capacity with a 512GB SSD. You can save $109 on this model in gold at Amazon. Most people will benefit from the added storage space; a 256GB drive fills up fast.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro uses Apple’s new M1 processor, which is an eight-core CPU with four performance cores and four efficiency cores, an eight-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The baseline model also features 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, a Retina display, the Magic Keyboard and the Touch Bar with Touch ID. The baseline config in space gray is currently $100 off at Amazon — down from the $149 discount we saw earlier this month.
Apple
The step-up MacBook Pro model doubles the storage capacity with a 512GB SSD and costs $1,499 from Apple, but you get it for $100 less at Amazon. As with the baseline model, this discount is smaller than the price break of $149 that was on offer earlier this month. Nearly every MacBook Pro user will appreciate the larger SSD. 256GB of storage is criminally small on a Pro-level laptop designed for creative work.

The current 16-inch MacBook Pro was the lone MacBook line not to receive an M1 upgrade. It features a ninth-gen Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M graphics and a 512GB SSD. It boasts a bigger screen with a higher resolution than its smaller, 13-inch sibling and is currently $114 off at Amazon. Unless you have an urgent need for a giant MacBook Pro, it would be prudent to wait until Apple delivers an M1 update to this line.
